ALERT – You’re entering dating SILLY SEASON!

You may not know it, but you’re entering the dating silly season. It’s a bit like the Glorious 12th, but much kinder to animals. From Boxing Day, online dating goes mad as everyone tries to find that perfect someone for 2015.test

So now’s the perfect time to get yourself prepared for the onslaught, and it starts and ends with your profile.

Here’s a few simple things you can do to make you stand out from the pack and show everyone what a winner you are!

Upload some photos – even if you have a photo already, upload some more. And try and make them say something about your personality. Photos give people a good idea of the type of person you are, so take advantage of our free photo upload service.
Give your profile a dust down – update your “About You” information. Things will have happened in your life since you wrote it last (for example that great Lego exhibition you went to last week), so let others know about them and give them a better insight into what makes you you.
Give Love/Hate a whirl – our Love/Hate feature lets others find out more about you. Answer our Love/Hate questions, and earn credits at the same time!
Brush up on your Interests – tell people in your own words what your interests are, and our clever matching technology will help you find likeminded others.

All this may seem a lot of effort, but it really doesn’t take up too much of your time…

And you’ll thank us when you walk off into the sunset with your new partner.

Good luck, LoveThings!

Write a winning dating profile

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again… Your dating profile is the main thing you should work on if you’re looking for online dating success. Neglect it at your peril.

…but we also know it’s sometimes difficult to know where to start. We’re not very good at writing about ourselves, are we? And staring at that blank screen, wondering what to write…we’ve all been there.

So to help you along, and cure your writer’s block, we’ve set out some tips and tricks for you. Follow these, and you’ll have a top dating profile in no time!

Think carefully about your answers
When you first sign up with any of our sites, you’ll be asked to give some basic info about yourself. You’ll also be asked questions about the type of person you’re looking to date.
The answers you give will help people to connect with you, whether that’s through advanced searches, or by seeing your profile as one of their daily matches or the matches we recommend to each member, so think carefully about what your profile really says about you.

Write about your interests
After you’ve filled in your basic information, describe the things you’re passionate about, such as your interests and hobbies and your favourite places to visit. It’s a good opportunity to give people an idea of what you do in your spare time as well as how you spend your working day.

Describe yourself uniquely
With so many profiles on LoveThing it’s important to make your dating profile stand out from the crowd. Try to avoid clichés and overused phrases such as “easy-going” and “looking for love”. Instead, consider what makes you different from everybody else – are you just mad about Gavin & Stacy or about triathlon & sport? Above all, be sure to inject humour to show people how friendly, fun and approachable you are.

Upload a profile picture
It perhaps comes as no surprise that the profiles that attract the most attention have a photo as well as a well-written profile. So choose a photo that reflects the kind of person you are. Make sure it’s crisp, clear and in focus. Avoid having your ex in there with you, or your child if you have one. If you don’t have an appropriate photo, then take one.

In our experience, your dating profile is the most important element in your dating success, so it’s essential that it says the right things about you, and reflects what you’re looking for in a partner.

Top 10 Free Dating Tips

When the LoveThings are socialising (yes, we get out and about occasionally), we’re often asked what are the top things to do (or avoid!) to get the most out of online dating. So we sat down with a coffee and, after more coffee (and biscuits) boiled our advice down to what we think are the Ten Top Online Dating Tips, or TTODT, for short (please write in if you can tell us how to say that).

So here they are…in no particular order. Let us know what you think:

1. Take time to write a fantastic online profile. Not just an “OK” one, but a FANTASTIC one. Make sure you use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Be honest, be interesting and don’t mislead people into thinking you are something that you are not.

2. Have fun. The most important part when meeting new people is to relax and have fun. When beginning your correspondence by email, be cautious and private, but don’t be overly serious either. Wear a smile when you’re logged in and it’ll shine through.

3. Describe the person that you would like to meet in the greatest detail possible. If you want to meet someone who has never been married with no children, then say so. Otherwise, you will be wasting a lot of time turning people down who you have no interest in. But by the same token, don’t be too fussy, and be open-minded. The type of person you think you don’t want to meet might just be the one…

4. Give a detailed description of your interests, hobbies, likes and dislikes. It is just as important to describe what you like, as well as what you dislike, so you attract someone with similar interests.

5. Update your profile occasionally to keep it fresh. For example, if you just got back from a great holiday where you learned to ski, then write about it.

6. Add a number of different photos to your profile. Your main photo should be a head shot, preferably with you smiling. Other shots are a chance to show yourself in other settings, such as doing a hobby you enjoy, perhaps dressed up at a formal event or even a candid shot at work.

7. Be polite when communicating online. If you are scared to tell someone “no” because it may hurt their feelings, tell them politely that you are looking for a certain type of person with specific characteristics and please not to take it personally.

8. Do not give out personal details such as your real first and last name or telephone early on and definitely do not include these in your profile (they’ll be deleted anyway).

9. Listen to Your Intuition. If something doesn’t feel right to you, it probably isn’t. Either move on or investigate further and proceed with caution. Read, listen, and ask lots of questions.

10. Always meet in a public place for the first time. A good place to meet is for coffee or lunch in a busy place. Make sure you let someone know where you will be and even have them phone you during the date for a safety check or an early escape if needed.

So there you have it! Online dating isn’t rocket science. If you follow these tips, and use your common sense, you’re going to have a whale of a time on LoveThing.

Good luck!
